Curriculum

Students in Years Prep-7 work across the eight key learning areas recognised by Education Queensland.

The Key Learning Areas are:

  • English

  • Mathematics

  • History

  • Geography

  • Science

  • Technology

  • LOTE (Languages Other Than English)

  • The Arts

  • Health and Physical Education.

Each term, staff meet as year level planning teams with the Head of Curriculum and Teacher Librarian to develop and refine units of work in each of the key learning areas. Staff access curriculum into the classroom materials supplied by Education Queensland to support the transition to the Australian Curriculum.

Where possible, the Kath Murdoch model of inquiry based learning is applied. This model encourages students 'to participate in active investigations, to engage in higher order thinking and to integrate, rather than separate knowledge as they move from acquisition of facts to the development of deep understandings. A sequence of activities and experiences is developed to build on and challenge student perceptions. This sequence is inquiry-based in that it begins with students' prior knowledge and experiences and moves through a deliberate process wherein that knowledge is extended, challenged and refined' (Kath Murdoch, Classroom Connections)

All programs are further enhanced by focused learning times, particularly in the fields of literacy and numeracy. Two hour literacy blocks with minimal timetabled interruptions support the classroom learning during this time.

Our focus is to provide an inclusive curriculum that aims to enhance outcomes for all students. Teachers have access to learning support staff, special needs staff, Advisory visiting teachers, English as a second language advisors, a guidance officer, behaviour management personnel and outside agencies to assist with planning and curriculum delivery for students with specific needs.

Our school's physical structure is predominately open plan-double teaching spaces with single year level classes at either end. All classrooms are fitted with concertina dividing doors. Historically we have three classes per year level but this can vary from year to year.
