Students in Years Prep-6 work across the eight key learning areas required by the Australian Curriculum and Education Queensland.
The Key Learning Areas are:
- English
- Mathematics
- HASS (Humanities and Social Sciences)
- Science
- Technologies (Design & Technologies; Digital Technologies)
- Languages (French)
- The Arts (Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Visual Arts, Music)
- Health and Physical Education.
Each term, staff meet as year level planning teams with the Head of Curriculum to refine units of work, with a key focus on English. Staff access Curriculum into the Classroom materials supplied by the Dept of Education to support the teaching of all areas.
All programs are enhanced by focused learning times, particularly in the fields of literacy and numeracy. Two-hour literacy blocks with minimal timetabled interruptions support the classroom learning during this time.
Our focus is to provide an inclusive curriculum that aims to enhance outcomes for all students. Teachers have access to support staff, advisory visiting teachers, a guidance officer, behaviour management personnel and outside agencies to assist with planning and curriculum delivery for students with specific needs.
Strathpine West State School provides a Prep-Yr 6 structured synthetic phonics program to support literacy learning. PLD (Promoting Literacy Development) progresses from students' systematically learning sounds and letter representations of our language to applying them in spelling, reading and writing contexts. Students commence with initial (simple) code, high frequency words and decodable texts and progress through to extended (more complex) code, extended vocabulary and reading authentic texts.
